Technology metal processing
Types of metal processing

Metalworking is a type of processing that brings together all technological processes aimed at changing the chemical and physical properties of the processed metal. These technological processes include the following types of metal processing:

  • Machining: this is a type of subtractive machining that involves shearing small parts of the product being processed, a material called chips; machining is divided into abrasive and machining;
  • Forming: This process involves applying pressure to metals and metal alloys. This pressure exceeds the yield point, thus permanently changing the shape and dimensions of the processed material. In addition, the mechanical properties of this product are changing. Plastic working can be carried out cold, hot and semi-hot. Due to the shape, we can distinguish plastic working as: rolling, forging, extruding, stamping and drawing;
  • Heat treatment: is another type of treatment involving heating, annealing and cooling the material to a given temperature and speed. This process is used to change the plastic and mechanical properties of a given material by changing its structure;
  • Chemical treatment: this method consists in chemically changing the surface of the processed material by applying a protective coating that protects the product against corrosion and thus increases its strength;
  • Thermo-chemical treatment: used in relation to iron-carbon alloys, i.e. steel, cast iron or cast steel. In this process, under the influence of heat, changes such as the chemical impact of the environment are made and some chemical and physical properties of the alloys are modified.
